Despite its roots in sport, Dartfish has long been used by diverse activities for which video can contribute to understanding and assessment. Here’s one such example.

Held each spring at Kennesaw State University’s Cole College of Business in Georgia, USA, the National Collegiate Sales Competition continues to draw interest and participation from both elite university professional sales programs and corporate recruiters searching for top flight college graduates. Participants nationwide prepare all year for the NCSC, culminating with 20 minute sales presentations to a ‘buyer’ that are judged by university professors and corporate sales experts.

“I think that the role play is a real life scenario, giving the students real rebuttals, real questions and real situations, which lets us as employers, get insight on how they would behave and act and close the sale, and what that looks like to them in a genuine atmosphere.” – Jasmine Hawthorne,Verizon Wireless

Founded 15 years ago by Dr. Terry Loe, Director for Selling at Kennesaw State in the Department of Marketing and Professional Sales, the NCSC grew out of Dr. Loe’s long-held belief that “Engaging students is a continuous challenge facing university faculty.” To address this, Dr. Loe brought competition into the classroom in conjunction with experiential role-play as a pedagogical tool for teaching selling skills. This methodology expanded into the NCSC, this year’s event being one of the largest yet; involving 60 corporate partners, 400 corporate representatives, 375 judges, 140 professors and individual student competitors from 67 universities. Multiple graduate level teams and individual graduate level competitors participated as well.

Technology and talent mix to make an amazing annual event

With so much on the line, it makes sense to evaluate the performances of the NCSC students with cutting edge technology. These students are the next generation of professional sales leaders and in some cases, they’ve practiced for years to impress the contest judges and the corporate recruiters who have joined to watch the show. Dartfish technology and the NCSC dartfish.tv channel provide judges, professors, and corporate recruiters the perfect solution for choosing the winners.

With live video capture and tagging and the ability for judges, professors, and corporate recruiters to review every presentation, judges can be sure that each segment of the judging criteria has been reviewed.

A Deeper View processed over 325 role plays for the NCSC annual competition.

Video System and Tagging Design

  • 9 competition rooms are connected with a Dartfish video feed to 9 corresponding judging rooms from where sessions are observed on large screens.
  • A computer, with Dartfish software, operates in each judging room to capture the video and store a local copy, which is then forwarded to a large video network storage drive.
  • Taggers use Dartfish software during the sales session to label the videos and tag key segments with the judging criteria.
  • Completed videos can be viewed on 20 Dartfish equipped computers in a computer lab, and after the competition on the KSU NCSC dartfish.tv channel.
