Coach Glen Mills has an impressive list of Jamaican sprinting’s household names under his wing and now Tyrone Lim joins the team.

Tyrone Lim discovering how to get results from Dartfish

Who? Let me introduce Tyrone. His speed is not on the track but he has a fast, agile mind when it comes to technology and he has been brought in as a video analyst to support the coaching staff. Dartfish met him this summer at the team’s European base at Brunel University, London, where he spent two days learning how to apply the software to the primary goal of developing a better understanding of sprinting mechanics.

A lot has been said about how Usain Bolt breaks the mould. In the video below, Michael Johnston, with the aid of Dartfish, explains how a 6’5” sprinting giant can be so fast. Now, Lim and Mills want to understand how other sprinters do what they do best.

To achieve this, Tyrone is particularly interested in how Dartfish will let him measure and compare stride patterns, body position and timings. In this regard, the Dartfish Datatable and the award-winning Stromotion technology catch his eye, not only as a way to illustrate and observe body position but to make measurements even when a moving camera is used. This gives some worthwhile numbers, but it isn’t easy; the panning camera necessitates repeated re-calibration of distance measurement. We spend a good chunk of time working out optimal camera settings and positioning and exactly how to get useful video of someone moving that fast.

The next step will be to ensure that the observations are used to inform coaching practice and give feedback to a new generation of super sprinters. Tyrone plans to introduce InTheAction instant feedback into training and, when athletes are racing all over the world, use dartfish.tv to post analysis of the television footage online.

Dartfish wishes Tyrone, Coach Mills and the entire team all the best and we look forward to seeing how what is revealed by Dartfish helps them to electrify athletics stadiums in the coming seasons.
